About Us

The Rostraver/West Newton Emergency Service is a non profit organization that was formed in the summer of 1976 by a group of individuals that consisted of a funeral director, business men/women, and residents of Rostraver Township.

Rostraver Emergency Medical Services first service location that they called home was the current James Stumps Funeral Home.  Later in 1976, it moved over to a small building along State Route 201, presently AAA Travel Agency site. The property for the first building was donated by George Sweeney II. The 1st ambulance was donated by James Stump. The call volume was around 125-150 request for assistance per year, with volunteers responding to those requests.

Then in 1981, REMS moved across the street to their current home. This brought many changes to the organization in their new home. One change was the community support was strong and thriving with volunteers. These volunteers ranged from drivers, CPR or First Aid training, Emergency Medical Technicians, and Emergency Medical Technician Paramedics.

Rostraver Emergency Medical Services continued to grow and grow. In 1991, REMS merged with Smithton/South Huntington Area Ambulance Service. In 1996, REMS merged with West Newton Community Ambulance Service, forming Rostraver/West Newton Emergency Services. In 2002, R/WNES merged with Community Ambulance Service.

Currently, it runs over 8,000 calls per year with stations located throughout the Mon Valley Area. R/WNES is the parent organization of The  Mon Valley Search and Rescue Divers, and also the Tri-County Tactical Rescue Team.
